The Amalfitan Coast constitutes one of the most beautiful and spectacular landscapes of the entire peninsula. Along its high and indented coast some terraces between the cliff and the sea cultivated with olives and orange-trees make the view still more unique. Not to mention the sea which offers small and picturesque beaches, favourite destination of a great number of tourists every year. The most famous pearls of this area are Positano, Maiori, Amalfi and Ravello.

POSITANO

Famous and elegant bathing destination, Positano is an ancient marine village. Its typical white houses are dislocated on green terraces sloping down to the sea. Very probably the name derives from “Posidii”, freedmen, of the Claudius age, owners of large estate in this area. Worth visiting are the parish church of St.Maria Assunta (with its valuable polychrome altars and a painting representing Madonna with Gesù) and the belvedere of Positano called “Schiaccone” from which it is possible to admire the coast. Among the beaches we remember that of Fornillo, Arienzo, Ciumiciello and La Porta.

AMALFI

Besides being the first maritime Republic of Italy, Amalfi is certainly one of the most famous seaside resorts in the peninsula. During the centuries it suffered Byzanthine domination by Byzanz and Lombards; after being rescued from these peoples Amalfi became a free flourishing republic. Don’t forget to visit the Duomo and the Chiostro of Paradise. We also suggest a brief stop at Capuchins’ Convent.

RAVELLO

Delightful Ravello, called ”the town of music”(every year a festival dedicated to Wagner takes place here), 350 metres high, overlooks the splendid blue sea of Amalfitean Coast. Roman colony in the VI century, it was annexed to Amalfi for the first time in IX century and again in the XI century following its flourishing destiny. The entire small town can be considered a monument.

We suggest a visit to the Duomo with its magnificient bronze doors, Rufolo Palace in the typical Arabian-Sicilian style, Villa Cimbrone, from which it is possible to enjoy an unforgettable view and the churches of St. Maria in Gradillo and S. Giovanni of Toro.

SORRENTO

One of the most famous holiday resorts in Campania, rises on a terrace from the cliff to the sea along the northern coast of the peninsula. Surrounded by a flourishing nature this elegant seaside resort has excellent receptive structures. The name Surrentum derives probably from Sirene. During the centuries it suffered under the Syracusans’ domination, the Sanniti’s one, the Romans’ one (during the age of Empire it was the favourite seaside resort of Roman notables), then it passed under the Byzanthine dominion, then that of the Normans and in 1799 became part of Parthenopean Republic.

MAIORI

An ancient fishing village, Maiori is nowadays a famous tourist centre equipped with excellent receptive structures. It was given the name of Maiori to distinguish it from the nearest Minori. At present only the ruins of massive walls and of the towers built in defense of the population remain. A visit to the church of S. Maria a Mare(XII century) and the sanctuary of S. Maria of Graces is suggested.
