The eclectic nature of Naples is due to its history. As a matter of fact, the numerous dominations suffered have left on the town a multicolor mark which makes it unique, being a mix of cultures, art and different customs.
Founded about 600 B.C. under the name of Partenope by a few farmers from Cuma. The Greek farmers completed it adding also a new part of town called Neapolis to distinguish from the old agglomerate called Palaepolis. |
During its history Naples suffered under the Romans’ rule, the Goths’ one, the Byzantine’s one, the Norman’s Domination, the Angevin’s one. It became Spanish province during the 16th century, then it passed under Austrian dominion, returned Spanish and finally became Capital of the Bourbons’ reign. Besides the artistic beauty when we think of Naples we immediately associate it to a spectacular nature.
This town, kissed by the sun and dominated by Vesuvius, is known also for its coasts overlooking the sea creating a gulf envied all over the world. Pearls of this gulf are the three islands of Ischia, Capri and Procida and of course the Amalfitean Coast.
Naples can be considered an open-air museum. |
Also worth visiting is Plebiscito Square from which Via Toledo, famous for its fashionable shops, starts. But to grasp the real Neapolitan spirit it is necessary to visit the heart of historical centre, that is to say, Spaccanapoli and, obviously, S.Gregorio Armeno where at Christmas we find Italy’s most beautiful cribs. |
