POSITION. The smallest and also most genuine of the three islands in the Bay of Naples is situated between Capo Miseno and Ischia. This island (which forms the Flegrean Archipelago with Ischia) is of volcanic origin and has an extended shape; it reaches less than 4 km of length to which the islet of Vivara is added.

HISTORY We have very few information about the history of Prochita, this was the ancient name of Procida, before the 16th century. Certainly the island came into contacts with the Greek world (recently remains of Mycenaean pottery have been discovered) and the Roman Empire. During the 7th century Mount St. Angel Abbey was built. It is possibile to reconstruct the history of Procida thanks to information from the Abbey’s inventory of 1521.
We know that the entire population was living close to the abbey, that is to say, the highest and the most impregnable point from which the islanders had the best possibility of defending themselves. The rest of the territory was used only for cultivation. During the 16th century the island suffered several incursions by Moors and pirates of the gulf; in the same century, precisely in 1554, the Royal Palace was built and the borough was reconstructed.
Moving forward in time we arrive at 1679 when the so-called “grancie” were founded: self-governing communities who manage themselves both from the economic point of view and administral one. |
TO BE VISITED: Corricella’s Bay, Chiaiolella coast where it is possibile to admire the colours of uncontamined nature. Apart from the beauty of its panorama Procida is worth visiting for tasting local dishes: rabbit, lettuce pizza, whole artichokes cooked, kid, and the “casatiello” and, of course, for buying the lemons, the typical product of the island.
