Atrani lies very close to Amalfi and conserves its medieval origins in its narrow streets, yards, small squares and typical flights of steps. It looks looks like a Nativity scene in front of the sea. During the old times of the Amalfitan Republic Atrani was the residence place of the most noble families, in which the doges of Amalfi have been crown and buried.
Atrani is a town of about 900 inhabitants of the province of Salerno in the Campania.
It is part of the Club of the beautiful villages of Italy with its 0.20 km ² is the smallest town in Southern Italy area and the smallest in Italy after Fair Primiero.
Sandwiched between the mountain to the east and Mount Civita Golden West, Atrani extends along the valley of the River Dragon, so called because legend has it that here lived a terrible dragon that breathed fire.
For the enchanting beauty of the streets, arches, courtyards, small squares of, characteristics of "stairways" of houses, built on one another, to the ambience of the evening, when the lights are on, Atrani often been used as film sets for movies and commercials becoming part of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Atrani, just 700 meters from the famous Amalfi Coast is the only country to preserve its ancient character of a small fishing village.
The first houses face directly onto the beach, then gather around the square with the church of San Salvatore and the stone fountain, rising eventually to the valley and climb along the rocky slopes of the hill, cross the gardens and crops lemon. Isolated from traffic, protected by its ancient houses with balconies full of flowers, the square of Atrani direct access to the beach and the sea, through the ancient passage created to rescue boats from storms. The respect and attention to the simple original vocation are, therefore, Atrani a rare example of balanced tourism development.
Real nerve center of the village, is the square, meeting place and entertainment: the tables of Italian bars and tourists from all over the world discussing their own opinions, get to know.
The Small Beach, decked boats and fishing nets in low season, becomes, in the summer version, a meeting place for young people of all nationalities. For tourists and visitors to discover the gentle landscape is interwoven with the testimony of history.
The memory architecture of the time is in the identity of this part of the world that, in the form of streets and squares talks about his backstory. A quid pluris helping make this small "village" unique and, perhaps, as precious few others.
