Phlegran Fields

With a fabulous cultural heritage, the Phlegrean Fields still conserve their ancient and deep charm, in which the history, the legend, the myth and the mystery find a common place in an everchanging volcanic nature. This zone is an absolute must for any visitor of the region Campania: the sung myths of Homer and Virgil, the greek culture that started to circulate through the whole peninsula begining just on these places, all kind of memories from those times in which the roman aristocracy used to build here luxury residences. Anyone who is genuinely impassioned by archaeology will find very much to see between imposing ruins, archaeologic parks and underground cities. The Phlegrean Fields are an enormous volcanic area on the western side of the gulf of Naples from the Posillipo hill until Cuma, including also the islands Ischia and Procida. The evidence of the volcanic nature in this area is demonstrated by the existence of tuff, fumaroles of boiling vapours, craters that became natural amphitheaters or lakes; some of them are the Averno, Lucrino, Fusaro and Miseno. The volcanic activity is spectacular, for example, at the famous Solfatara and in the springs of Agnano Terme.

POZZUOLI
This is one of the most fascinating archaeologic areas all over the world. It has been the main harbour of the region during the roman age. With the excavations of Rione Terra, the city has discovered an “Underground Pompeii” of impredictable attraction. Pozzuoli was founded by greek settlers on 520 B.C. They called the city “Dicearchia”, that means “right government”. It has been called later “Puteoli”, just because of the wells of smelling sulfur vapors, and it became the biggest harbour of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

THE SOLFATARA

At the Solfatara, nearby Pozzuoli, it is possible to see closely a boiling lava crater with its vapours and fuming muds. This active volcano is visitable and constitutes one of the principal attractions of the Phlegrean Fields. The Solfatara was born aprox. 4000 years ago and it manifests itself through fumaroles, gas and mineral waters springs, hot muds and seismic shocks.

BAIA

The city of Baia represents the richest part of the phflegrean archaeology. The imposing ruins of the roman age demonstrate the old splendour of those times, when the zone was the most elegant residential area. The majority of the fabulous buildings of Baia lies under the sea. These ruins constitute the “Archaeological Undersea Park of Baia”.
