To visit in Procida

TERRA MURATA
Situated on the highest promontory of the island at 90 meters high and is the core of the "heart" of historic Procida, considered the oldest residential center and refuge for the islanders during the various invasions that have occurred over the centuries.
The Terra Murata, although it was always a town, to the visitor seems like a veritable fortress, built for defensive purposes. On one side is protected by walls overlooking the sea on the other side from fortified walls (hence the name) built only in the fifteenth century.
Before the construction of walls, the houses themselves acted as a shield, were constructed so as to leave no spaces between each other and, one upon another, and almost without openings to the outside.
Once past the hill that leads and two majestic entrance doors, the Terra Murata rewarded by its medieval atmosphere, full of narrow alleys and traditional houses popular, with stunning views over the Bay of Naples.
From inside of the Terra Murata the houses show numerous openings, balconies, terraces, outdoor staircases, arches with sides held in the typical pastel colors that are also found in other parts of the island.
The dominant building is the Palazzo d'Avalos, built together the walls, in the 1830 the building was converted in prison and was finally closed in 1988.
The reference point for cultural and religious center of the Terra Murata is the famous Abbey of St. Michael the Archangel, a Benedictine foundation that dates back to the eleventh century, destroyed and rebuilt over the centuries, whose current architecture is from the fifteenth century.
Inside you can admire the altars, paintings and statues of all times while the lower floors of the museum complex keep an ossuary and guard a library with 8,000 books and ancient manuscripts.
The Casale Vascello, a large courtyard surrounded by tall terraced houses, is an example of a fortified residential architecture, dating from ‘500 and is one of the first settlements outside the town.

MARINA CORRICELLA
Even considering the fishing port, is a wealth of folk architecture of the eighteenth century is unique in its kind that has held up miraculously to adverse sea water conditions.
Corricella, despite being one of the oldest settlements on the island, does not have the fortitude almost hostile atmosphere like the Terra Murata or the courtyard of the farmhouse Casale Vascello.
The impression it gives is amiable, cheerful with colorful houses, and almost always sunny terraces where you can enjoy fine cuisine that the local restaurants offer.
An important contribution to the relaxing and serene atmosphere that gives the village of fishermen is the fact that there is no traffic and it can be reached only along one of several steps hidden among the houses.

MARINA CHIAIOLELLA
Is the western end of the island, located just in front of Ischia, where you can enjoy the sunset.
The formation of the town dates from the nineteenth century but, the row of houses the Piazzetta are dating from the seventeenth century.
With the promenade, rich of restaurants and bars, is considered the most important tourist place of the island.

VIVARA ISLAND
The island, volcanic crater in the past, is today an oasis of protection fauna; the first documents which Vivara is mentioned it date back to the fourteenth century and later, during the reign, became the exclusive hunting grounds of the King; only in the 1818 was ceded to the Municipality and used for  growing about crops and vines and olive trees.
At the center of the island stands the manor house, a structure of the 1681 with  homes and places of service for making and olive pressing.
Now Vivara is a research station for the detection of bird migratory wildlife.
