Transfer from hotel to Frassitelli which lies at the foot of Pietra dell’Acqua and is the spot where the walk begins begins. Starting with the area of partially uncultivated terraces which still keep their ancient fascination and where an excellent wine was produced and lentils and wheat were also grown . Pass through the little village of Fontana and, after a few steps, plunge into the really unpolluted nature, enjoying a wonderful alternation of surroundings even though the island only has a surface of about 46 square kilometres. The sight is captured by very deep valleys, where rain falls headlong making them always wider and deeper. Nevertheless, during this trekking there is even more astonishing scenery to be admired: after having gone beyond the first valley, the so-called “Pizzi Bianchi” suddenly appear on the right: enormous rocks of white tuffa, whose tops have been uniformly covered by endogenous agents, creating a lot of little “pizzi” (peaks) without vegetation. As a result, they produce a surprising contrast to the bordering fields. In the middle of these enormous rocks of tuffa there are wonderful caves, which extend to the border of the ravine, and which were once used as wine cellars and still keep the remains of the millstones and the air shafts. In the background of this magnificent panorama, the vastness of the sea is only rent by the tower of St. Angelo on the right. At approx three o’clock Maronti beach is reached and one can plunge into the fresh water in order to relievethe healthy weariness. In a peasant cave one can now taste a savoury “Cafona-Salad” and grilled sausages washed down with local wine. This trekking is suitable for people who really love nature, are perfectly fit and don’t suffer from heights or dizziness. Suitable shoes are necessary. Duration: from 09.00 a.m. to 04.00 p.m.
