Nature has been prodigal with the island of Ischia. An extraordinary wealth of natural beauty which is in addition a treasure hidden in the bowels of the earth, hot springs
More than 100 springs have their source in Ischitan earth, most of them are THERMAL SPRINGS.
The curative effects of this water, which is very rich in minerals and usually hot, has been known since Roman times. Some springs have also radioactive qualities. Today modern spas are famous for their scientifically tested treatments under medical surveillance (bathes in mineral water or mud, but also inhalations), but they also offer different kinds of massages and treatments for beauty and well being.
BATHES IN MINERAL WATER:
A complete therapy consists in 10 – 20 baths. Once a day (on empty stomach) the patient takes a full or partial bath in water of 37-39 degrees centigrade for 15-20 minutes. After the bath the patient is covered and rests for 30 minutes (“time of reaction”). This treatment is used especially for rheumatism, skin and metabolic diseases and gynaecological problems.
Special gynaecological douches are available as well.
Clay of volcanic origins (traditionally from the hills over Lacco Ameno) matures for at least six months in mineral waters, thus absorbing in concentrated form its mineral salts.
A complete therapy consists of 10 – 20 treatments. The hot mud is applied to a part or the complete body for 20-30 minutes. After this the patient is showered and then takes a bath in mineral water, producing a sauna effect. Indicated for skin and metabolic diseases, gynaecological infections and problems following fractures.
VERY IMPORTANT: as these cures are very effective people with heart-problems, sufferers of acute rheumatisms, arthritis or tuberculosis, pregnant women or small children, must not take them. Before you start a therapy of bathes and/or muds, the responsible doctor of the spa has to visit you. He will be responsible for your wellbeing throughout the treatments.
A complete therapy consists of 15-20 applications; indicated for bronchial and ear problems.
Is similar to inhalations. Mineral water is transformed into a very fine fog that arrives directly into the lungs.
If you want to enjoy the hot springs without taking “serious treatments”
…. Most hotels on the island have swimming pools with thermal water. As this is the same kind of water used for treatments people who suffer from diseases should check with reception desk if they can use the pools.
…. Very characteristic are the “Garden Spas”, lovely combinations between beautiful gardens, pools with thermal water, excellent spa facilities and access to the sea. It takes an entire day to try all the different pools. The entrance is not cheap – but it is worth it! Please note: children might not be admitted to the area of hot pools – please check at the entrance!

MORE ABOUT SPRINGS
Only few of the more than 100 springs are drinkable.
Springs at an altitude between sea level and 100 mt. are all mineral or “hyper thermal”, between 100 and 400 mt. they are generally semi-mineral. Only springs over an altitude of 400 mt. are cold and drinkable. Following some of the most important springs:
The BUCETO spring at about 450 mt. provides parts of Fiaiano and Ischia with drinkable water.
The NITRODI spring sources in Buonopane. It contains sulphur, alkaline and bicarbonate. It is drinkable but also curative for skin complaints and –infections. The spring has been used since Roman times. Showers can be taken in the tiny spa that has been opened recently.
The OLMITELLO spring has its source near the Maronti Beach. It is rich in minerals, diuretic, and curative for gastric problems.
