The municipality on the west side of the island has a population of almost 12,000 residents. Reaching from the promontory of Zaro in the north to the Punta Chiarito in the south, from the sea to the west to the slopes of Mount Epomeo in the east it is Ischia’s largest municipality with 12,85 square kilometres. Known as the village of towers and churches it is also believed to be the warmest area because its position grants sunshine until the evening.
THE PLACE: Approaching the borough from the north the first impression is that of multi-coloured buildings nestling around the impressing watchtower near the port, while the white church of our Lady of the Snow watches out over the sea. Leaving the historical centre behind one arrives to the long sea front with strange formations of stone, leading to the famous Citara beach with the Gardens of Poseidon. Still further south rural areas like Panza, well known for its wine production, seem to be suspended in time. SPECIAL BECAUSE.... : This sunny district alternates some of the island’s most beautiful beaches with cool hills, hectic areas full of life with quiet peaceful zones. The centre is a charming example of Mediterranean architecture, with narrow lanes, buildings from 1600-1800’s with hidden courtyards full of flowers, numerous churches and watchtowers. |
PLACES TO VISIT CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF THE SNOW: This singular example of Mediterranean architecture is better known as the Church of Soccorso. Originally from the 14th century and refitted in the late 18th century it is dedicated to sailors and fishermen. Inside majolica tiles with colourful decorations, votive offerings of wooden ship models, and a big ancient wooden cross. From the square around the church the legendary “Green flash” might be seen at sunset. CHURCH OF S. CARLO BORROMEO: For this modern church in the form of a Latin cross green tufa rock has been used profusely. Inside frescoes and canvases from the 17th century.
BASILICA OF OUR LADY OF LORETO: The basilica in the centre of Forio is rich in canvases and sculptures. The sacristy dates to the late 17th century. IL TORRIONE: In the Torrione works by local sculptor Giovanni Maltese are on display. Private art galleries can be found near the port, but also in the area “Scentone”. WATCHTOWERS: 10 watchtowers can still be seen throughout the borough. They served as a defence against pirate attacks, to light signal fires and as shelters. The older towers are circular while the more recent ones are square shaped. The “Torrione” (15th century) is the biggest tower and the symbol of Forio. It was fitted with many cannons that were in use until 1787. Torre Nocera, Sferratore, Casa Patalano, Milone are from the 16th century, Torre Quattrocchi from the 18th century. |
WINE: For a pleasant stroll through vineyard choose Panza where some of the best wine cellars can be found. Our tip: Pietratorcia Wines, where sitting under a shady pergola, you can taste not only the excellent house wine, but also typical products of the region like cheese, ham, olives and bruschetta.
